Super Falcons Crash Out, As Nigeria’s Title Defence Ends in Cameroon Heartbreak

AWC SPORTS DESK

Nigeria’s dream of retaining the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title has ended in disappointment after the Super Falcons suffered a painful 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon, bringing an early end to their campaign in Morocco.

The elimination capped a turbulent tournament journey for the reigning champions, who entered the competition as Africa’s most successful women’s football nation and favourites to extend their dominance. Nigeria had arrived in Morocco aiming to defend the continental crown they reclaimed in 2024.

However, the warning signs appeared from the opening match when the Super Falcons were stunned by tournament debutants Malawi in a dramatic 3-2 defeat. The result marked one of the biggest shocks of the competition as the Chawinga sisters inspired the Malawian side to a historic victory over the 10-time African champions.

Nigeria showed flashes of recovery during the group stage, but the inconsistent performances exposed weaknesses in defence, finishing, and overall tournament control. For a team built on experience and continental pedigree, the campaign was marked by moments of brilliance mixed with costly lapses.

Against Cameroon in the quarter-final, the Super Falcons struggled to break down a disciplined Indomitable Lionesses side. Cameroon’s Myriam Nyadjou Wamen scored the decisive goal as Nigeria’s attack failed to find an equaliser before the final whistle.

The defeat represents a major setback for Nigerian women’s football, ending hopes of a record-extending title run and raising questions about the team’s preparations, tactical approach, and ability to maintain dominance in an increasingly competitive African women’s football landscape.

Cameroon’s victory also highlighted the growing strength of challengers on the continent, as nations such as Malawi and Cameroon continue to close the gap on Nigeria’s traditional supremacy.

For the Super Falcons, the focus now shifts from defending a crown to rebuilding, addressing weaknesses, and preparing for future international challenges.

Nigeria remains Africa’s most decorated women’s football nation, but this WAFCON campaign serves as a reminder that past glory alone can no longer guarantee continental success.
