Nigeria’s Reform Scorecard: The Numbers Are Now on the Table

AWC ECONOMY DESK, AUGUST 2026

The Honourable Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, delivered the closing remarks at the presentation of Nigeria’s Reform Scorecard: The Benefits, Costs & Harm Prevented, held in Abuja on August 19, 2026. The scorecard provides a government account of what changed under the reforms, the costs incurred, the benefits recorded and the economic risks government says were avoided.

The Federal Ministry of Finance reports that the reforms generated an estimated ₦15.8 trillion in subsidy savings across the Federation, while the Federal Government’s incremental resources stood at about ₦20.4 trillion against approximately ₦30.6 trillion in additional expenditure pressures. The ministry says the figures should be examined critically and in context — not simply as a story of “money saved,” but as a broader story of fiscal adjustment, spending pressures and resources shared across the federation.

The invitation is therefore clear: read the data, ask questions and hold government accountable for the outcomes. The reform story, as presented, is still a work in progress — and Nigerians deserve both the successes and the shortcomings to be examined honestly.
