Nigeria and Cameroon Seal Defence Pact to Secure Borders, Dismantle Cross-border Criminal Networks

Yaoundé, June 16, 2026 – In a significant move to strengthen regional security cooperation, the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Cameroon have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at deepening defence collaboration and improving joint responses to cross-border threats.

The agreement was signed between Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, and Cameroon’s Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Mr. Joseph Beti Assomo, following two days of high-level strategic discussions in Yaoundé.

The MoU focuses on enhanced intelligence sharing, coordinated joint military operations, improved border security management, and stronger institutional collaboration between both countries in tackling shared security challenges, including terrorism, arms trafficking, and transnational criminal networks operating along the Nigeria–Cameroon border.

Both defence chiefs reaffirmed that the agreement marks a renewed commitment to regional stability and reflects the urgency of collective action against evolving security threats in the Lake Chad Basin and adjoining frontier communities.

Security experts say the pact is expected to significantly improve rapid response mechanisms, strengthen surveillance along porous borders, and enhance interoperability between Nigerian and Cameroonian security forces.

Officials further emphasized that the agreement builds on existing regional frameworks under the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), while introducing more structured bilateral coordination for operational effectiveness.

The development has been described as a strategic milestone in West and Central African defence relations, particularly at a time when cross-border insecurity remains a major regional concern.
