Singapore Airlines has reclaimed the title of the World’s Best Airline, displacing Qatar Airways from the top position in the 2026 Skytrax World Airline Awards.
The result was announced at a ceremony in London on Friday, September 18, with Singapore Airlines returning to the summit for the sixth time in the history of the prestigious passenger-voted awards. Qatar Airways, which held the top position last year, finished second, while Cathay Pacific Airways took third place.
The 2026 results underline the continuing strength of Asian airlines in the global aviation industry. Seven of the top 10 carriers are Asian, while Qatar Airways and Emirates represent the Middle East and Turkish Airlines is the highest-ranked European carrier at fifth.
The global top five are:
- Singapore Airlines
- Qatar Airways
- Cathay Pacific Airways
- ANA All Nippon Airways
- Turkish Airlines
Emirates ranked sixth, followed by Air France, Hainan Airlines, Japan Airlines and Korean Air.
Singapore Airlines’ victory was supported by strong performances in individual categories. The carrier also won World’s Best Economy Class, World’s Best Economy Class Onboard Catering and Best Airline in Asia.
Qatar Airways may have lost the overall crown, but it remained a major winner at the awards, collecting four major honours. These included World’s Best Business Class Airline, an award it has now received 13 times, World’s Best Business Class Lounge, Best Airline in the Middle East, and the inaugural World’s Best Onboard Wi-Fi award.
The result is particularly notable because Qatar Airways has won Skytrax’s overall World’s Best Airline title nine times, making its move to second place a significant change at the top of the annual ranking.
Cathay Pacific, meanwhile, strengthened its position in third place and won the World’s Best Cabin Crew award, while Air France captured the award for World’s Best First Class Airline. STARLUX Airlines was named the World’s Cleanest Airline.
Skytrax says the World Airline Awards are based on an international passenger satisfaction survey. The 2026 survey ran from September 2025 through August 2026, involved travellers from more than 100 nationalities and covered more than 300 airlines. Skytrax describes the awards as independent passenger-choice awards and says it pays the costs of the survey and awards process.
The rankings arrive during a difficult period for global aviation, with airlines facing geopolitical disruptions, changing travel patterns, operational pressures and rising expectations from passengers for connectivity, comfort, efficiency and service.
Yet the 2026 results also demonstrate that competition at the top of international aviation remains intense.
For Singapore Airlines, the return to No. 1 represents a restoration of a position it last held in 2023. For Qatar Airways, the second-place finish comes alongside a strong haul of specialised awards, particularly in business-class service and onboard connectivity.
The broader message from the rankings is unmistakable: Asian and Middle Eastern carriers continue to exert enormous influence over the global premium-airline market, while passenger expectations increasingly extend beyond aircraft and seats to encompass service, food, lounges, digital connectivity and the entire travel experience.
And as airlines battle for passengers across increasingly competitive international routes, the Skytrax verdict provides another reminder that in aviation, the journey is no longer judged solely by getting passengers from one airport to another—it is judged by the experience delivered along the way.
