A major breakthrough in Nigeria’s fight against kidnapping has been recorded following the successful rescue of pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, after spending 56 days in captivity.
The President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu lauded the coordinated security operation that led to the rescue, which was spearheaded by the National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, that secured the freedom of the Oyo pupils and teachers.
In other words, the rescue operation was coordinated through a combination of intelligence gathering, military action and inter-agency collaboration involving the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and other security formations.
The Presidency described the operation as a significant victory for Nigeria’s security architecture, commending the security agencies for working continuously to secure the release of the victims while avoiding collateral damage. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the operation also led to the arrest of eight suspected abductors, while some members of the criminal group were neutralised.
Recalling How the Crisis Began
The victims were abducted on May 15, 2026, when armed men invaded communities in Oriire Local Government Area, Ogbomoso axis of Oyo State, targeting three schools:
- Community Grammar School
- Baptist Nursery and Primary School
- Local Authority Primary School
Reports indicated that about 39 pupils/students and seven teachers were initially taken away by the attackers. One of the abducted teachers was later reported killed during the period of captivity, causing national outrage and increasing pressure on security agencies to secure the release of the remaining victims.
Who Were the Kidnappers?
Security authorities have described the attackers as terrorists and bandits, but official sources have not conclusively named the group as Boko Haram, ISWAP, or any formally identified terrorist organisation.
However, intelligence reports and security analyses have linked the attackers to criminal elements operating around the Old Oyo National Park forest corridor, an area increasingly exploited by armed groups and kidnappers. Some reports suggested possible links with extremist elements moving from northern conflict zones, including remnants of Boko Haram networks, but no official confirmation has been issued identifying the group as Boko Haram.
The Role of Intelligence and Security Coordination
The rescue operation followed weeks of intelligence-led efforts involving surveillance, tracking, community intelligence, and tactical planning.
Earlier interventions included:
- Deployment of military and police tactical teams.
- Intelligence operations to identify the kidnappers’ networks and collaborators.
- Monitoring of suspected logistics channels supporting the criminals.
- Collaboration between federal and Oyo State security structures.
Following the abduction, President Tinubu had also approved additional security measures for the affected communities, including the deployment of a special rescue team, recruitment of forest guards, and consideration of establishing stronger military presence in vulnerable areas.
President Tinubu Commends Security Agencies
President Tinubu praised the armed forces, DSS and police for what he described as a successful intelligence-driven operation.
He expressed gratitude to the officers and men involved, saying the rescue had brought relief to the affected families and the nation.
The President also assured Nigerians that justice would be pursued against those responsible for the attack and the killing of victims during captivity.
A Major Relief, But Security Challenges Remain
The rescue has been welcomed as a major achievement in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against kidnapping and terrorism, particularly because the attack represented a worrying expansion of mass school abductions into southern Nigeria.
Security experts, however, warn that the incident highlights continuing vulnerabilities around rural communities, forests, and schools located far from rapid-response security infrastructure.
The emergence of criminal networks in previously less affected regions underscores the need for:
- Improved intelligence sharing.
- Stronger community policing structures.
- Better protection for schools.
- Faster security response mechanisms.
- Greater control of forest corridors used as criminal hideouts.
The rescue of the Oriire pupils and teachers demonstrates the impact of coordinated security operations, but it also reinforces the urgent need for sustained measures to prevent future attacks.
