“The Numbers Have Spoken; Democracy Has Taken Its Course” — Amb. Dr. John Metchie

Prominent peace ambassador, community leader, and national development advocate, Ambassador Dr. John Metchie, has weighed in on the political developments surrounding the emergence of DCP Mohammed Ahmadu (Rtd.), Jarman Deba, Madugu Yamaltu, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer for the Gombe Central Senatorial District, describing the outcome as a reflection of the democratic will of party members and a significant shift in the political dynamics of the constituency.

Reacting to the issues highlighted in a widely circulated political commentary titled “Shifting Political Sentiments in Gombe,” Ambassador Metchie noted that the APC primary election outcome should be viewed through the lens of evolving grassroots political realities rather than through partisan emotions or the disappointment of political interests adversely affected by the result.

According to him, the emergence of DCP Mohammed Ahmadu represents more than an electoral victory; it symbolizes a growing demand among party members and constituents for leadership rooted in experience, integrity, service, community engagement, and practical development-oriented politics.

A Verdict Delivered by Party Members

The retired Deputy Commissioner of Police secured a commanding victory during the APC senatorial primary election, polling approximately 42,785 votes against the 10,425 votes attributed to his closest rival, a result that political observers described as decisive and difficult to dispute.

Ambassador Metchie stressed that the significance of such a margin cannot be ignored.

“The essence of democracy is the supremacy of the ballot. When party members participate freely in a transparent process and produce a clear winner, the outcome deserves respect. Political contests naturally produce winners and losers, but the legitimacy of the process should not be questioned simply because certain interests are dissatisfied with the result,” he stated.

The Rise of a Grassroots Mobiliser

Ambassador Metchie further argued that Mohammed Ahmadu’s victory reflects years of sustained engagement with local communities across Gombe Central.

Unlike many politicians who become visible only during election cycles, he noted that the retired police officer has consistently invested in community development initiatives that directly impact ordinary citizens.

Among the projects credited to Mohammed Ahmadu are rural electrification programmes valued at over ₦29 million, installation of solar street lights in Deba and surrounding communities, sponsorship of educational programmes, construction of classrooms, payment of examination fees for students, youth employment facilitation, and support for religious institutions irrespective of denomination.

According to Metchie, these interventions have created a reservoir of goodwill that translated into overwhelming support during the APC primary election.

A Career Built on Service

Ambassador Metchie also highlighted Mohammed Ahmadu’s distinguished record in public service, describing his rise through the ranks of the Nigeria Police Force to Deputy Commissioner of Police as evidence of discipline, competence, and commitment to national service.

“He served Nigeria meritoriously before retirement and has continued to serve his people through philanthropy, empowerment programmes, and grassroots development. His public record demonstrates a combination of administrative experience, security expertise, and community engagement that resonates with the aspirations of the people,” he observed.

The peace ambassador noted that at a time when insecurity, unemployment, and economic challenges remain pressing concerns, candidates with strong backgrounds in public safety and community mobilisation are increasingly attracting public confidence.

A New Political Direction for Gombe Central

Political analysts believe the APC primary result may indicate a broader generational and ideological shift within Gombe Central politics.

For many supporters, Mohammed Ahmadu’s candidacy represents an opportunity to inject fresh energy into legislative representation while maintaining continuity with the developmental aspirations of the constituency.

Ambassador Metchie stressed that the electoral outcome should not be interpreted as a rife within the APC but rather as evidence of internal democracy functioning as intended.

“What is unfolding is not political instability but political evolution. Party members have exercised their constitutional right to choose their preferred candidate, and they have done so in a manner that produced a clear and unambiguous outcome,” he stated.

Looking Ahead to the Senate

As APC’s official flag bearer for Gombe Central Senatorial District, Mohammed Ahmadu is expected to campaign on a platform centred on youth employment, rural development, agricultural support, healthcare improvement, educational advancement, and enhanced access to electricity and clean water.

His supporters believe his security background and extensive grassroots network position him strongly ahead of the general elections.

For Ambassador Dr. John Metchie, the emergence of DCP Mohammed Ahmadu is ultimately a story about democratic participation and the growing influence of grassroots politics.

“The people have spoken through the ballot. The task now is to consolidate that mandate, unite stakeholders, and focus on delivering the development and representation that the people of Gombe Central deserve,” he concluded.

A Defining Moment

As political activities gather momentum ahead of the general elections, many observers have expressed optimism that the momentum generated by Mohammed Ahmadu’s primary victory will translate into broader electoral success.

For now, however, supporters insist that the APC primary has already delivered one clear message: the political landscape in Gombe Central is evolving, and DCP Mohammed Ahmadu (Rtd.), Jarman Deba, Madugu Yamaltu, has emerged as one of its most prominent current faces.
