Lagos, Nigeria – July 7, 2026 – The United States Government has issued a security advisory warning citizens and residents in Lagos to exercise increased caution following concerns over possible activities linked to the annual observance of the Neo Black Axe Movement (NBM) Day, an event historically associated with clashes involving rival confraternity groups.
According to the advisory released by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, July 7 is recognised annually by members of the NBM, a group identified by authorities through its traditional symbol of a black beret with a yellow stripe. The advisory noted that previous celebrations have sometimes been linked to violent confrontations with rival groups, including the Buccaneers, Vikings, and Eiye, whose members are traditionally associated with blue berets.
The U.S. Mission stated that reported activities connected with these groups have historically occurred around areas including Agege, Iyana Ipaja, Ikorodu, Mushin, and the Lekki–Ajah corridor, with previous incidents also recorded around parts of Lekki Phase 1.
The advisory warned that although gatherings by such groups are often held in private locations such as hotels and private venues, activities could potentially spill into public spaces, creating security risks for residents and visitors.
Police Increase Patrols
The Lagos State Police Command is expected to intensify security patrols around identified areas of concern as part of efforts to prevent criminal activities and maintain public safety.
Security experts have continued to advise residents to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary gatherings, and report suspicious movements to law enforcement agencies.
Safety Recommendations
The U.S. Mission advised travellers and residents in Lagos to:
Monitor local news and security updates;
Avoid large crowds and demonstrations;
Remain aware of their surroundings;
Keep a low profile;
Review personal security plans;
Exercise caution when moving at night;
Stay alert in areas frequently visited by tourists and visitors.
The advisory stressed that the warning is a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring public safety during a period when security agencies are monitoring possible tensions.

Authorities and community leaders have continued to emphasise the need for peaceful conduct, urging individuals and groups to avoid violence, criminal activities, or actions capable of threatening lives and property.
