…From the ICC courtroom to the Élysée Palace — Nigeria’s Paris moment gets attention

French President Emmanuel Macron has hosted Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to a private dinner at the Élysée Palace in Paris, in a high-level engagement underscoring the continuing diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and France.
The dinner took place on Thursday night, September 17, 2026, during President Tinubu’s stay in France as he rounds off the European leg of his three-week leave, which the Presidency has described as a working vacation.
The engagement was disclosed by officials of the Nigerian Presidency, with Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, describing the meeting as reflecting the enduring relationship between the two countries and their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Although details of the private dinner were not made public, the meeting places Nigeria-France relations in the spotlight at a time when both countries maintain cooperation across areas including trade, investment, security, energy, education and diplomatic affairs.
The Macron-Tinubu dinner also came on the same day that Nigeria secured a major legal victory at an International Chamber of Commerce arbitration tribunal in Paris over claims connected with the long-running Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project dispute.
The ICC tribunal rejected claims brought by Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited, in a case involving potential claims reported at more than $3 billion. The Nigerian government has described the ruling as removing a major legal obstacle surrounding the long-delayed Mambilla project.
The two developments — the ICC victory and the Élysée Palace engagement — occurred against the backdrop of President Tinubu’s stay in France.
However, while the timing is notable, there is no public evidence that the private dinner with President Macron was directly connected to the ICC arbitration decision or that any specific new agreement was concluded at the dinner.
The significance of the engagement therefore lies principally in the continued high-level contact between the leaders of two important countries and the potential for deeper Nigeria-France cooperation.
For President Tinubu, the Paris leg of his European working vacation has thus included a consequential legal development for Nigeria and a private engagement with one of Europe’s most prominent leaders.
The dinner at the Élysée may have been private, but the diplomatic signal is public: Nigeria and France continue to keep their channels of high-level engagement open.
