According to multiple credible reports, retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information and one-time spokesman of the Nigerian Armed Forces, was laid to rest in Katsina State after dying in the custody of kidnappers who had abducted him and his wife in late May 2026.
What Happened?
Major General Rabe Abubakar (rtd.) and his wife were abducted by suspected bandits along the Matazu axis of Katsina State while travelling from Kaduna to Katsina. Reports indicated that the attackers ambushed the couple’s vehicle, while their driver escaped with gunshot injuries.
Following the abduction, the Katsina State Government launched what it described as a “multi-dimensional security operation” involving intelligence gathering and coordinated rescue efforts. Authorities disclosed that preliminary investigations suggested the retired general and his wife were specifically monitored and trailed before the attack, indicating that the kidnapping may have been a targeted operation rather than a random incident.
Death in Captivity
On June 13, 2026, the Katsina State Government confirmed the death of the retired military officer while in captivity. The state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, stated that General Rabe died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held by his captors.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the incident as a “dark moment” for Katsina State and Nigeria, noting that despite sustained efforts by security agencies and the state government to secure his freedom, the rescue mission ended tragically.
What About His Wife?
As of the latest official reports available, there has been no confirmed announcement from the Katsina State Government or security agencies that General Rabe’s wife has been released. Earlier government statements consistently referred to ongoing efforts to rescue both the retired general and his wife. This suggests that the wife might still be in captivity.
Though, the status of his wife remains unclear publicly. While several reports suggest she may still be in captivity, no official confirmation of her release or continued detention had been issued as of June 14, 2026.
Why His Death Is Significant
General Rabe Abubakar was widely respected within military and security circles. During his service, he played a prominent role as Director of Defence Information, serving as a key public voice of the Armed Forces during critical counterinsurgency operations. His abduction and subsequent death have renewed concerns over the growing insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria and the vulnerability of even high-profile former security officials to criminal gangs.
The incident has attracted widespread national attention, with condolences pouring in from military veterans, government officials, and security stakeholders who described his death as a major loss to the nation. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also sent in his condolence.
