Abuja, Nigeria — Four police officers attached to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have been arrested and subjected to disciplinary action after allegedly extorting ₦53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, at an illegal checkpoint in Abuja.
The incident, which has generated public reactions and renewed concerns over police misconduct and illegal roadblocks, reportedly occurred around the Banex area of Abuja, where the officers allegedly abandoned their assigned duties and mounted an unauthorized checkpoint to stop motorists.
According to the FCT Police Command, the officers were accused of stopping motorists and demanding money from them before allowing them to proceed.
However, in an ironic twist, one of the motorists allegedly stopped at the checkpoint was the head of Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency — the ICPC Chairman himself.
₦53,000 Allegedly Collected Through POS Transaction
Reports from the police authorities indicated that the officers allegedly compelled the ICPC Chairman to withdraw money from a Point of Sale (POS) operator after stopping him.
The amount reportedly withdrawn was ₦53,000, including transaction charges, which was allegedly handed over to the officers before they shared the proceeds among themselves.
The officers, according to the police, allegedly carried out the action without knowing the identity of the person they had stopped.
FCT Police Command Reacts
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Sanusi, condemned the alleged action, describing the officers involved as individuals whose conduct had embarrassed the Nigeria Police Force.
He stated that the officers were identified, tracked, arrested and are currently facing disciplinary procedures alongside further investigations.
The police leadership emphasized that such behaviour does not represent the values and professional standards expected from officers entrusted with protecting citizens.
Renewed Concerns Over Illegal Checkpoints
The incident has again brought attention to the persistent problem of unauthorized checkpoints and alleged extortion by some security personnel in parts of Nigeria.
Civil society groups and security analysts have repeatedly warned that illegal roadblocks undermine public confidence, create opportunities for corruption, and damage the reputation of security institutions.
While lawful stop-and-search operations remain part of policing duties, authorities have consistently directed officers to avoid unauthorized checkpoints and roadside harassment of citizens.
Anti-Corruption Chief Becomes Victim of Alleged Extortion
The development has attracted widespread public commentary because the alleged victim is the official responsible for fighting corruption and abuse of office.
Observers say the incident highlights the need for stronger accountability mechanisms, better supervision of security personnel and improved enforcement of police operational guidelines.
The FCT Police Command said the investigation and disciplinary process will determine the appropriate sanctions for the officers if found culpable.
The case also serves as another reminder that corruption and abuse of authority can only be effectively addressed when institutions demonstrate transparency and punish misconduct within their own ranks.
