The United Nations has issued a fresh warning over the growing dangers of extreme heat, declaring that the climate crisis is no longer a distant concern but a present reality affecting communities across the world.
In a message highlighted by the United Nations, Secretary-General António Guterres warned that “extreme heat is not a future threat. It is here. It is becoming more dangerous.”
The UN chief cautioned that unless urgent measures are taken to protect vulnerable populations and address the root causes of climate change, the impact of rising temperatures will become even more severe.
According to the United Nations, extreme heat is already claiming lives on an increasing scale, worsening social inequalities, deepening hunger, weakening economies and threatening sustainable development efforts across nations.
The warning comes amid increasing global temperatures, unpredictable weather patterns, prolonged heat waves and worsening climate-related emergencies affecting millions of people.
Guterres stressed the need for stronger climate action, including policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting vulnerable communities, improving early warning systems and strengthening adaptation measures.
Climate experts have repeatedly warned that extreme heat poses serious health risks, particularly to children, the elderly, outdoor workers and people living in vulnerable conditions. Rising temperatures also affect agriculture, water availability, energy systems and economic productivity.
For countries like Nigeria and other developing nations, climate change presents additional challenges, including increased pressure on food production, public health systems and urban infrastructure.
