…Former Police Chief Takes Over from Long-Serving Senator Goje as Gombe Central Race Enters New Phase
The political landscape of Gombe Central Senatorial District has taken a new turn following the emergence of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mohammed Ahmadu, popularly known as Jarman Deba, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2027 Senate election.
A document circulating from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) candidate portal indicates that Mohammed Ahmadu is listed as an APC candidate seeking election into the Senate to represent Gombe Central Senatorial District. The document identifies his constituency, political party, personal details and other required candidate information submitted to INEC.
The emergence of Jarman Deba represents a major political transition in Gombe Central, where former Governor and Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje has maintained significant influence for many years. Goje, who has represented the district since 2011, lost the APC senatorial primary election to Jarman Deba in 2026, marking a significant shift in the district’s political direction.
Reports from the APC primary process indicated that DCP Mohammed Ahmed (Rtd.) secured victory after polling a wide margin of votes against Senator Goje, who had dominated the constituency’s political landscape for over a decade.
The APC senatorial primary committee also announced DCP Mohammed Ahmed as the party’s flag bearer for Gombe Central ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Before entering partisan politics, Jarman Deba built a career in the Nigeria Police Force, rising to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police before retirement. His supporters describe him as a candidate bringing experience in security, administration and public service into the legislative contest.
His candidacy will now place him at the centre of a major electoral contest as voters have quite connected with him based on his track records, capacity and vision for representing Gombe Central at the National Assembly.
Political observers say the development reflects a broader trend in Nigerian politics ahead of 2027, where established political structures are being challenged by new actors with backgrounds in security, public administration and professional service.
For Gombe Central, the 2027 Senate election promises to be closely watched as Jarman Deba seeks to consolidate the APC structure while opposition parties prepare their own strategies to challenge the ruling party’s dominance.
The journey from a decorated police officer to a Senate hopeful now enters a new phase — one that will be decided by the electorate of Gombe Central, who are very enthusiastic to support, going by current opinion polls.
