Egan, Lagos State – Pupils of DAFET Nursery and Primary School, Egan, Lagos, recently took part in a practical environmental education programme organised by Humane Global Network, where they learned the importance of tree planting and environmental conservation through hands-on activities.
The event featured an interactive tree-planting exercise during which the children were taught how to plant pawpaw trees as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and encourage a culture of conservation from an early age.
Members of Humane Global Network explained the critical role trees play in sustaining life, highlighting their importance in producing oxygen, providing nutritious food, offering shade, preventing environmental degradation, and serving as habitats for wildlife.
The pupils enthusiastically participated in planting the seedlings under the guidance of facilitators, transforming classroom lessons on nature into practical experience.
To reinforce the day’s lessons, the organisers held a creative colouring session using pawpaw-themed activity sheets. The exercise combined environmental education with art, making the learning process engaging, enjoyable, and memorable for the children.
Speaking after the event, organisers stressed that nurturing environmental consciousness in young children is essential to building a generation that values sustainable living and protects the natural world.
They noted that simple initiatives such as school tree-planting programmes can have lasting impacts by instilling responsibility, empathy, and respect for nature in future generations.
The programme concluded with a renewed commitment by Humane Global Network to continue promoting environmental education among schoolchildren as part of broader efforts to combat climate change and foster greener communities.
As the organisation aptly stated:
