…A Tribute by the African Writers Centre (AWC)
The African Writers Centre (AWC), on behalf of its management and entire staff, mourns the passing of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, distinguished elder statesman, renowned businessman, astute politician, former Governor of the old Gongola State, former Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), former Federal Minister of Industries and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, who died at the age of 90, was a towering figure whose remarkable life traversed public administration, maritime development, business, politics, governance and Pan-African economic leadership.
Born on September 15, 1935, Alhaji Tukur rose to national prominence through his distinguished service as General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority from 1975 to 1982, where he contributed to the modernisation of port operations and the development of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
His contribution to the maritime industry remains particularly significant. At a time when Nigeria was consolidating its position as a major regional economic power, he brought leadership, administrative experience and a clear understanding of the strategic importance of the nation’s ports to national development.
His journey subsequently took him into the political arena. During the Second Republic, he emerged as a formidable political figure and was elected Governor of the old Gongola State in 1983, a state whose territory is today largely represented by Adamawa and Taraba States.
But Bamanga Tukur was not a politician who abandoned enterprise for politics. He distinguished himself in the private sector as Chairman of BHI Holdings and the DADDO Group of Companies, with interests spanning manufacturing, agriculture, logistics and trading. He also served as Federal Minister of Industries between 1993 and 1995 under the military administration of General Sani Abacha.
His influence extended beyond Nigeria.
As a prominent Pan-African businessman and development advocate, Alhaji Tukur served as Executive President of the African Business Roundtable and Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group, using these platforms to promote intra-African trade, private-sector development, investment and sustainable economic growth across the continent.
His political career reached another major milestone when he became National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from March 2012 to January 2014. At the time, the PDP was Nigeria’s dominant ruling political party, and Tukur occupied one of the most consequential positions in the country’s political establishment.
His tenure reflected his long-standing belief in political organisation, party discipline, consensus-building and the responsibilities that accompany leadership.
For the African Writers Centre, however, the legacy of Bamanga Tukur goes beyond the offices he occupied.
He represented a generation of Nigerian leaders who understood that public service was a calling, leadership was a responsibility and national development required vision, courage and enterprise.
He was a man whose footprints could be found across the maritime sector, public administration, politics, industry and African economic diplomacy.
Nigeria has therefore lost not merely a former governor, former minister or former political party chairman, but a true elder statesman whose life was deeply intertwined with the evolution of modern Nigeria.
The AWC particularly remembers his contribution to the development of Nigeria’s maritime economy and his advocacy for stronger African economic cooperation. His belief in the potential of Nigeria and Africa, and his support for intra-African trade and private-sector-led development, remain relevant to the continent’s continuing search for sustainable prosperity.
At 90, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur departed with a long record of service behind him.
His generation is gradually leaving the stage, and with them goes a reservoir of institutional memory, political experience and historical knowledge that Nigeria must preserve for generations yet unborn.
The African Writers Centre extends its heartfelt condolences to the Tukur family, the Fombina Emirate of Adamawa, the Government and people of Adamawa State, the Peoples Democratic Party, the Nigerian business and political communities, the maritime industry and the entire African community of leaders and institutions with which he served.
We pray that Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Aljanna Firdaus.
May Allah grant his family, associates and all who mourn him the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur may have departed, but the footprints of his service remain.
May his memory endure.
