The Anambra State Government has announced a statewide ban on the construction of unauthorised speed bumps and road breakers across the 21 local government areas of the state, citing concerns over road damage, safety risks, and poor infrastructure management.
The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, made the announcement during a road inspection exercise, stating that indiscriminate construction of speed bumps by individuals, communities, and organisations has become a major factor contributing to the deterioration of roads across the state.
According to the commissioner, many of the speed breakers are poorly designed and constructed without professional input, leading to structural damage, water retention, and faster deterioration of road surfaces.
He warned that the government would remove existing illegal speed bumps and that anyone found constructing new ones on public roads would face sanctions in line with Anambra State laws.
However, the announcement has generated mixed reactions among residents and road users. While many have supported the government’s position, arguing that illegal speed bumps create hazards for motorists and damage roads, others have expressed concerns that removing all speed bumps without providing alternative traffic control measures could increase road crashes, especially in densely populated communities and areas with schools, markets, and pedestrian activities.
Some residents argue that properly designed speed control measures remain necessary in locations where speeding vehicles pose risks to lives and property.
Transport experts have continued to advocate for a balanced approach — where speed bumps are not completely eliminated but are professionally designed, properly located, and approved by relevant authorities based on traffic studies.
The development highlights the need for stronger collaboration between government agencies, communities, and road users to ensure that road infrastructure improvement is matched with effective safety measures.
As Anambra intensifies its road rehabilitation and infrastructure drive, the challenge remains finding the right balance between protecting roads from damage and protecting citizens from speeding vehicles.
