A Mexican Navy aircraft carrying medical patients, including a young child, crashed into Galveston Bay near the Texas coast on Monday afternoon, claiming the lives of at least five people and prompting a multi-agency rescue and recovery operation.

The small military medical transport was on a humanitarian mission ferrying burn patients and medical personnel when it went down near the causeway linking Galveston Island with the Texas mainland. The flight was part of a medical transfer coordinated with the Michou y Mau Foundation, a nonprofit that assists severely burned children in reaching specialised care, including at Shriners Children’s Hospital in Galveston.

Casualties and Rescue Efforts

According to officials, at least five of the eight people on board were killed, including a 2-year-old child who was believed to be a patient being transported for treatment.

Four of those aboard were Mexican Navy officers, while the remaining four were civilians, among them the young patient and two members of the nonprofit organisation.

Rescue teams, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Galveston police, fire crews and federal aviation authorities, responded swiftly. Two survivors were pulled from the water and taken to local medical facilities, and one person remained unaccounted for as search operations continued into the night.

Conditions and Investigation

The crash occurred amid heavy fog and low visibility, which local officials said could have contributed to the aircraft’s difficulties during its approach to Scholes International Airport. The precise cause of the accident has not yet been determined and remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Mexican authorities.

Eyewitnesses reported that the plane descended into the shallow waters of Galveston Bay near the causeway around mid-afternoon, catching emergency crews and volunteers in their response efforts.

Humanitarian Mission Interrupted

The flight’s purpose — transporting vulnerable patients for critical medical care — adds a somber dimension to the tragedy. The Michou y Mau Foundation and its partners had been working to secure advanced treatment for children suffering from severe burns, and the crash dealt a painful blow to those efforts. The foundation has expressed condolences to the families of the victims and vowed to continue its mission despite the loss.

Regional and International Impact

The incident has drawn attention from both U.S. and Mexican officials, reflecting the cross-border cooperation in medical humanitarian efforts. The tragedy underscores the inherent risks faced by medical evacuation flights, especially under challenging weather conditions, and has prompted renewed calls for navigation safety reviews and enhanced flight support in adverse conditions.

For many who watched the rescue unfold from the Texas shoreline, the loss of life — particularly that of a young child — has brought the holiday season to a sudden and sorrowful halt. Investigations continue as authorities seek to clarify the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
