PRESIDENTIAL SECURITY GRID ACTIVATED IN ABUJA AS TINUBU RETURNS — BUT PRESIDENT LANDS IN LAGOS

…Heavy Security on Abuja Airport Corridor but Tinubu Returns to Nigeria Through Lagos

By Amah Alphonsus Amaonye, Director General, African Writers Centre, AWC

The unusual deployment of security personnel and military hardware along the Abuja airport corridor on Tuesday, September 29, triggered intense speculation that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was expected to return to the nation’s capital from his four-week working vacation in Europe.

An aviation correspondent of the African Writers Centre (AWC) observed an unusually heavy security presence along major sections of the road leading to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, with personnel from various security agencies apparently engaged in traffic control, access management and security monitoring.

Around areas manned by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), armed personnel were visibly deployed, directing traffic and ensuring that vehicles did not cause unnecessary stoppages along the airport corridor. A similar heightened presence was observed around areas controlled by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

Closer to the airport, the security build-up became even more pronounced. Nigerian Army personnel were observed carrying out access control and security monitoring, while armoured personnel carriers and other military vehicles were positioned along parts of the route. Further towards the airport, personnel of the Nigerian Air Force were also visible, while an unusually strong Nigeria Police Force presence was observed around the airport toll-gate area, alongside additional military checkpoints.

The scale and distribution of the security deployment naturally generated speculation among travellers, motorists and airport users that the presidential movement was imminent.

That expectation, however, did not materialise in Abuja.

Information available to AWC indicates that the President’s itinerary was directed towards Lagos, rather than Abuja. The Presidency had earlier confirmed that Tinubu would return to Nigeria through Lagos following the completion of his European working vacation.

President Tinubu subsequently arrived at the Presidential Wing of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at about 6:22 p.m. on Tuesday, according to reports citing the presidential arrival.

The Presidency had explained that the decision to return through Lagos was connected to the President’s programme for the 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1. Tinubu is expected to participate in Independence Day activities in Lagos, including the premiere of a film honouring the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, widely associated with the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

The President is also expected to attend to official engagements in Lagos before returning to Abuja next weekend, according to the announced itinerary.

The heavy security presence witnessed around Abuja Airport therefore appears, at least in hindsight, to have coincided with preparations for anticipated presidential movement or heightened security requirements, although AWC has not independently established the precise operational reason for each agency’s deployment.

What is clear is that the President’s return from Europe was confirmed for Tuesday, after he left Nigeria on August 30 for what the Presidency initially described as a three-week vacation, later extended by several days.

The development also demonstrates the extraordinary level of security coordination that accompanies presidential movements in Nigeria — with the Army, Air Force, Police, NSCDC and other agencies capable of creating a highly visible security grid around major presidential routes and facilities.

For Abuja airport users, the mystery surrounding the unusual security build-up may therefore have been resolved only after the President’s aircraft touched down in Lagos: the anticipated presidential return happened, but not in Abuja.
