The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a stunning 3–0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday night in Bissau, turning what was expected to be an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign into a deeply damaging setback.
Playing at the Estádio 24 de Setembro, Nigeria conceded after just 15 minutes when Franculino Djú cut through the Nigerian defence and curled a left-footed effort beyond goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. The early goal unsettled the Eagles and gave the hosts confidence.
Nigeria had opportunities to respond, including a chance created by Alex Iwobi for Ademola Lookman before half-time, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Embadjé produced an important save. Nigeria went into the interval trailing 1–0.
The second half brought no Nigerian revival. Instead, Mama Baldé doubled Guinea-Bissau’s advantage in the 66th minute, firing a low effort into the bottom corner after Nigeria’s defence again failed to deal effectively with the attack.
Nigeria introduced fresh attacking options, including Moses Usor, Moses Simon, George Ilenikhena and Tolu Arokodare, but the Super Eagles could not find a breakthrough. Ilenikhena came close late in the game, only to be denied by the Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper.
Then came the final humiliation. With Nigeria pushing forward, Álvaro Djaló broke through and scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time to make it 3–0, completing one of Guinea-Bissau’s most significant victories over Nigeria.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR NIGERIA
The defeat leaves Nigeria with three points from two matches, following last Friday’s 2–1 comeback victory over Madagascar. Guinea-Bissau, meanwhile, have won both of their opening matches and moved to six points at the top of Group L.
The situation is particularly important because Tanzania is already guaranteed a place at AFCON 2027 as one of the three co-hosts, meaning Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar are effectively competing for the remaining qualifying place in the group.
Nigeria therefore remain mathematically alive, with four matches still to play, but the margin for error has become considerably smaller. The Super Eagles must recover points in the remaining fixtures while hoping Guinea-Bissau drop points.
The 3–0 scoreline also carries significance beyond the three points. Nigeria now have to overturn a substantial deficit in the return meeting with Guinea-Bissau if the qualification race eventually comes down to the two sides.
For a country that has won the AFCON three times, the performance in Bissau will inevitably raise questions about Nigeria’s defensive organisation, attacking efficiency and overall game management.
Guinea-Bissau, on the other hand, have made a powerful statement. After beating Tanzania 2–0 in their opening fixture, they have now defeated Nigeria without conceding a goal in either match. They have emerged as the early pace-setters in Group L.
The Super Eagles still have a route to the 2027 tournament, but that Tuesday’s defeat has transformed the campaign. Nigeria can no longer afford another major slip.
