Nigeria and China are moving to deepen cooperation in renewable energy, clean technology and technical capacity development as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to expand reliable electricity access and attract investment into the power sector.
The development followed an engagement between Nigeria’s Ambassador to China, Lt. Gen. Ambassador Abdulrahman Dambazau, and the Technical Committee of the China Energy Society on strengthening collaboration in renewable energy, research, investment and technology transfer.
The engagement focused on leveraging China’s expertise to support Nigeria’s transition towards cleaner and more reliable energy systems, while developing local technical capacity to sustain investments in the sector.
According to the information released by the State House, discussions also explored opportunities for increased Chinese investment in Nigeria’s energy industry, expansion of power-generation capacity and the transfer of appropriate technologies to Nigerian institutions and businesses.
Ambassador Dambazau stressed the importance of transforming the longstanding Nigeria-China relationship into practical partnerships capable of delivering tangible development outcomes.
The proposed cooperation comes against the backdrop of Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenges, growing demand for energy and the Federal Government’s push to diversify the country’s energy mix.
Beyond financing and infrastructure, however, the emphasis on technology transfer and capacity building could prove particularly significant. For Nigeria, the value of foreign investment in renewable energy will ultimately depend not only on the amount of capital attracted, but also on how effectively local engineers, manufacturers, researchers and enterprises acquire the expertise required to operate, maintain and eventually develop the technologies.
A stronger Nigeria-China renewable-energy partnership could therefore open opportunities in solar power, energy storage, mini-grids, clean-energy manufacturing and other emerging technologies—provided agreements are structured to guarantee meaningful local participation.
The latest engagement signals Abuja’s intention to make renewable energy cooperation with China more commercially productive and development-focused, with the ultimate objective of improving electricity access and strengthening Nigeria’s domestic energy capacity.
