The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has raised a fresh warning over possible flash floods in 13 states between August 11 and 20, urging residents, emergency agencies and other stakeholders to take early precautionary measures.
The states identified as being at high risk are Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Taraba, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.
NiMet said its warning was based on several factors, including expected rainfall intensity, existing soil-moisture conditions, drainage capacity, terrain and dam characteristics.
The agency stressed that the alert is intended to support early preparedness, emergency response planning and disaster-risk reduction, rather than create unnecessary panic.
According to the weather agency, the greatest concern is for low-lying, flood-prone, urban and riverside communities, where intense rainfall could rapidly produce flash flooding.
NiMet warned that the consequences could extend beyond homes and communities to critical infrastructure, with possible road closures, traffic disruption, damage to bridges and drainage systems, interruptions to electricity and telecommunications services, and losses to farms, crops and livestock. Heavy rainfall could also reduce visibility and disrupt road and aviation operations.
Residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to monitor official weather and emergency alerts, avoid walking or driving through flooded roads and fast-moving water, and be prepared to relocate to safer areas when necessary.
Emergency management authorities have also been urged to strengthen surveillance and pre-position response teams, while farmers are advised to improve drainage and move livestock, machinery and harvested produce away from flood-prone areas.
NiMet emphasised that flash floods can develop rapidly, making early warning and early action critical to saving lives and protecting property.
