The Federal Government has stepped in to avert a looming disruption in Nigeria’s aviation sector, following a sharp increase in the price of Jet A1 fuel that triggered concerns among domestic airline operators.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, intervened after operators raised alarm over the rapid rise in aviation fuel costs, from about ₦900 per litre to approximately ₦3,500 within a short period, representing an increase of nearly 300 percent.
Airline operators had earlier indicated the possibility of suspending operations nationwide, citing unsustainable operating conditions driven largely by fuel costs, which account for a significant portion of airline expenses.
Following the minister’s engagement with stakeholders, the operators agreed to put the proposed strike on hold, pending further consultations aimed at finding a lasting solution to the crisis.
A high-level stakeholders’ meeting has been scheduled in the coming days, on April 22, where key players, including regulators, fuel suppliers, and airline executives, are expected to deliberate on pricing mechanisms, supply challenges, and broader industry sustainability.
Industry observers note that the minister’s intervention has, for now, helped to stabilize the sector and prevent immediate disruption to flight operations across the country.
The potential impact of a shutdown had raised serious concerns, given the aviation sector’s critical role in facilitating business activities, government operations, and national connectivity.
