The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for greater commitment to the protection and advancement of women’s rights as Nigeria joined the global community to commemorate the 2026 edition of International Women’s Day.
In a message released on Sunday to mark the annual celebration, the First Lady praised the resilience, courage, and achievements of women and girls across Nigeria and around the world, noting that their contributions remain vital to national progress and development.
“Today, on International Women’s Day 2026, I join millions of Nigerians and the global community in celebrating the strength, courage, tenacity, and achievements of women and girls across Nigeria and around the world,” she stated.
This year’s celebration is themed “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” a call that the First Lady said highlights the urgent need for deliberate policies and actions that guarantee equal opportunities and protection for women.
According to her, empowering women should not be viewed as an act of charity but rather as a strategic investment in the nation’s future.
“When we give women access to education, healthcare, economic empowerment, leadership platforms, justice and equity, we gain stronger families, more prosperous communities, and a more inclusive nation,” she said.
Senator Tinubu emphasized that the advancement of women is closely tied to the progress of the country, stressing that sustainable development cannot be achieved without ensuring equal participation of women in all sectors of society.
She therefore urged Nigerians, policymakers, and institutions to renew their commitment to policies and initiatives that support women’s empowerment and gender equality.
The First Lady concluded her message with a rallying call underscoring the importance of women to Nigeria’s growth.
“When women rise, Nigeria rises. Happy International Women’s Day.”
International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8 to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while advocating for gender equality and the protection of women’s rights worldwide.
