Nigerian Military Losses Chief of Naval Operations

AWC Security Desk, February 21, 2026

The Nigerian Navy has announced the passing of its Chief of Naval Operations, Musa Katagum, who died on February 19, 2026, after a protracted illness.

Rear Admiral Katagum, a senior officer of the Nigerian Navy, served in several strategic capacities during his distinguished military career. Prior to his appointment as Chief of Naval Operations in November last year, he held key positions including Director of Presidential Communication, Command and Control Centre (PC4), and Chief of Intelligence of the Nigerian Navy.

His death marks a significant loss to the naval service and the Armed Forces, where he was regarded as a seasoned officer with vast operational and intelligence experience. Colleagues describe him as a disciplined professional who contributed meaningfully to strengthening maritime security and operational coordination.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family and the Nigerian Navy.
