The Federal Government has unveiled plans to significantly upgrade Nigeria’s aviation and airspace security architecture through the deployment of advanced radar systems and counter-drone technologies aimed at safeguarding critical national infrastructure.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, disclosed that the initiative will extend the country’s radar coverage beyond the current 5,000-foot operational limit, enabling broader and more effective surveillance of Nigerian airspace. He added that the programme will also introduce modern counter-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) systems, including jammers, to protect airports and Nigerian Air Force bases across the country.
According to the Minister, the upgrades are designed to address emerging security threats, enhance real-time threat detection, and strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to respond swiftly to airspace violations. He noted that aviation security remains central to national security, economic stability, and public safety.
The Ministry further revealed that discussions are ongoing with Qatar-based defence and security firm, Barzan Holdings, to integrate world-class command, control, and surveillance solutions into Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure. The collaboration, to be executed in partnership with the Nigerian Air Force, will focus on deploying cutting-edge technology while also building local technical capacity.
Officials explained that the initiative will not only improve airspace management and airport security but also support technological development, knowledge transfer, and long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s aviation security systems.
The planned upgrades underscore the Federal Government’s commitment to modernising critical infrastructure, strengthening national defence, and ensuring the safety and integrity of Nigeria’s airspace in line with global best practices, in pursuit of unity, peace, and progress.
