3 Dead, 12 Rescued as Two-Storey Building Sinks into the Ground in Ogun; Abiodun Orders Probe

A two-storey building has collapsed and dramatically sunk into the ground at Ajuwon area of Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, leaving at least three people dead and 12 others rescued as emergency responders continue operations at the site.

The incident occurred on Monday, July 27, 2026, along Baale Road, near Bada Hospital and Ajuwon Bus Stop, following a heavy rainfall accompanied by severe thunderstorms.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the building did not merely collapse outwardly but gradually caved into the ground, with the ground and first floors completely swallowed beneath the surface, leaving only parts of the upper structure and roof slab visible.

Emergency agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other rescue teams, were immediately deployed to the scene to search for possible survivors trapped under the debris.

According to reports from rescue officials, three persons have so far been confirmed dead, while 12 others were successfully rescued from the collapsed structure. Rescue operations continued as authorities worked to make the site safe and prevent further danger from the remaining unstable portions of the building.

Governor Abiodun Orders Full Investigation

Following the tragedy, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, ordered a comprehensive technical investigation into the cause of the building failure.

The governor directed relevant agencies to determine whether the collapse resulted from structural defects, construction irregularities, environmental factors, or a combination of factors.

Preliminary observations suggested that the heavy rainfall and intense thunderstorms may have contributed to the disaster, although authorities stressed that only a detailed engineering assessment would establish the actual cause.

NEMA Leads Emergency Response

The National Emergency Management Agency deployed rescue personnel and equipment to support evacuation efforts and debris management.

Emergency responders reportedly worked to remove dangerous sections of the remaining structure to enable safer access to areas where victims might still be trapped.

Officials also advised residents and bystanders to stay away from the unstable site to avoid secondary incidents.

Renewed Concerns Over Building Safety Standards

The Ajuwon tragedy has again raised concerns about building safety, compliance with approved construction standards, and the need for stronger enforcement of building regulations across Nigerian cities.

Experts in structural engineering have consistently warned that building collapses often result from multiple factors, including poor foundation design, substandard materials, weak supervision, illegal modifications, soil problems, and failure to comply with approved building specifications.

They have called for mandatory structural integrity assessments, especially in areas experiencing rapid urban expansion and increased pressure on infrastructure.
