Former Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has formally commenced his diplomatic assignment as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Spain.
Ikpeazu presented his Letters of Credence to King Felipe VI of Spain at the Royal Palace in Madrid on Monday, September 14, formally marking the beginning of his tenure as Nigeria’s ambassador to the European country. Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the development in a statement published on September 15.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Ikpeazu conveyed the greetings and best wishes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Spanish monarch, government and people.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with Spain, particularly in trade and investment, energy, infrastructure, agriculture, education, culture, tourism, security and people-to-people exchanges.
PUSH FOR STRONGER ECONOMIC TIES
The new ambassador has also identified the revival of existing bilateral agreements as an important part of his diplomatic agenda.
Among the issues highlighted is the Nigeria-Spain Bilateral Air Service Agreement, which Ikpeazu says should be reviewed and revitalised to facilitate direct air connectivity between both countries.
Such connectivity could have implications for tourism, trade, investment, business travel and people-to-people relations between Nigeria and Spain.
Ikpeazu also expressed Nigeria’s readiness to work with Spanish government institutions and the private sector to expand commercial opportunities and increase trade and investment flows.
A NEW PHASE OF DIPLOMATIC ENGAGEMENT
The presentation of Letters of Credence is a significant formal stage in diplomatic relations, as it establishes an ambassador’s accreditation to the host country.
The Spanish Royal Household confirmed that King Felipe VI received Ikpeazu’s credentials at the Royal Palace in Madrid on September 14 alongside those of ambassadors from Ghana, Chile, Venezuela, Thailand and Palestine.
Ikpeazu’s appointment therefore places an experienced Nigerian political figure at the centre of Abuja’s diplomatic engagement with Madrid at a time when both countries are seeking to deepen economic and institutional cooperation.
FROM GOVERNOR TO DIPLOMAT
Ikpeazu served as Governor of Abia State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to Spain.
His transition from state-level political leadership to diplomatic representation now gives him responsibility for advancing Nigeria’s interests in Spain and strengthening relations between the two countries.
Beyond government-to-government relations, his mandate includes promoting opportunities involving Nigerian businesses, Spanish investors, the Nigerian community in Spain and broader cultural and educational exchanges.
The Nigerian Embassy in Madrid has indicated that it will work with the Spanish Government, diplomatic community, private sector, development partners and Nigerians living in Spain to translate existing goodwill into concrete areas of cooperation.

For the African Writers Centre, Ambassador Ikpeazu’s formal assumption of duty presents an opportunity for Nigeria to pursue a more commercially focused diplomatic relationship with Spain.
Trade, investment, direct air connectivity, energy, agriculture, infrastructure, tourism and education provide practical areas where diplomatic engagement can produce measurable outcomes.
The expectation will now be that the new ambassador converts diplomatic goodwill into projects, investments, stronger commercial links and tangible benefits for Nigerians and Spaniards alike.
From Umuahia to Madrid, Ikpeazu now carries a different mandate — representing Nigeria beyond its borders and helping build bridges between two countries with considerable economic and people-to-people interests.
