…Residents Urged to Stay Alert as American Embassy Warns of Possible Demonstrations, Traffic Disruptions and Security Risks in Nigeria’s Capital
The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to American citizens and residents of the Federal Capital Territory over possible Arba’een-related processions and protests expected to take place in parts of Nigeria’s capital city on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
In the advisory, the embassy stated that the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) may organise activities to commemorate Arba’een, an important religious observance among Shi’a Muslims marking the end of the 40-day mourning period following the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, grandson of Prophet Muhammad.
The embassy warned that previous IMN processions and protests in Abuja have sometimes resulted in confrontations between participants and Nigerian security forces, with incidents involving the deployment of measures such as tear gas, water cannons and, in some cases, live ammunition.
According to the advisory, possible locations where processions or gatherings may occur include:
- ICICE Al-Noor Mosque, Ibrahim Babangida Boulevard
- Foud Lababidi Mosque, off Sultan Abubakar Way
- National Mosque, Constitution Avenue
- Eagle Square and Unity Fountain, Shehu Shagari Way
- National Human Rights Commission Headquarters, Aguiyi Ironsi Street
- Area 10 Shopping Plaza, Tafawa Balewa Road
- Berger Junction, Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway
- Banex Plaza, Aminu Kano Crescent
The embassy advised citizens to avoid protest areas, stay away from large gatherings, monitor local developments, maintain awareness of their surroundings and review personal security arrangements.
It also urged people who unexpectedly find themselves near demonstrations to move away safely, avoid displaying valuables, keep communication devices charged, carry proper identification and vary travel routes and schedules where possible.
The alert further advised residents to remain cautious in public places, including shopping centres, entertainment venues and places of worship, while familiarising themselves with emergency exits whenever they enter buildings.
The U.S. Embassy stressed that its Consular Sections in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos remain open, while encouraging citizens to monitor official updates through embassy communication channels.
The security alert comes amid broader concerns over maintaining public safety during large gatherings and religious processions, with authorities expected to ensure peaceful activities while preventing any breakdown of law and order.
