South East Poised for Economic Renaissance, Declares Governor Peter Mbah

AWC MDA Desk, 4th February, 2O26
Enugu – The South East region is on the brink of an economic awakening, Governor Peter Mbah announced at the South East Development Commission, SEDC Vision 2050 Stakeholders Forum in Enugu, calling for a reimagining of regional collaboration and development.

Governor Mbah said the global economy is being reshaped by technology, climate pressures, supply chain realignment, and rapidly moving capital. “Those who can organize, integrate their markets, and build systems at scale will rise. Those who cannot will remain consumers of other people’s added value,” he cautioned.

Highlighting the region’s rich history of trade, cooperation, and shared purpose, Mbah noted that administrative fragmentation has slowed progress. “We are culturally aligned but structurally fragmented, energetic but under-skilled, ambitious but often operating below our collective potential,” he observed.

The governor urged a fundamental shift in thinking to unlock the South East’s full potential. He emphasized that Nigeria’s goal of building economic prosperity by 2030 will be built from the periphery, with regional integration essential to translate national macroeconomic gains to households and communities.

Governor Mbah concluded that bold policies at the national level have stabilized the economy, but the South East must unite to coordinate infrastructure, mobilize capital, and present a compelling proposition to investors to secure its place in the global economic arena.
