Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening diplomatic, security and economic ties with Italy following the reception of the new Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Roberto Mengoni, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
At the meeting, both sides underscored the enduring relationship spanning more than six decades, positioning Italy as one of Nigeria’s most strategic European partners in trade, diplomacy and development cooperation.
Discussions covered key shared priorities, including irregular migration management, youth capacity building, technical assistance, defence and intelligence collaboration, and counter-terrorism efforts, reflecting a growing alignment on security and human development challenges affecting both regions.
The engagement also explored avenues to expand economic cooperation, with emphasis on skills transfer, investment, and sustainable development initiatives capable of delivering mutual growth and socio-economic benefits.
Nigerian officials described the renewed engagement as consistent with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s foreign policy outlook, which prioritises strategic partnerships that strengthen national security, empower young people and unlock economic opportunities.
For Italy, the talks reaffirmed its interest in working closely with Africa’s largest economy, while both countries agreed to sustain high-level dialogue to translate diplomatic goodwill into measurable outcomes for citizens on both sides.
