Wike, NSA, SGF and Top Aides See Tinubu Off as President Embarks on Strategic Turkey State Visit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu departed Abuja on Monday, January 26, 2026, for a state visit to the Republic of Türkiye, with a high-level send-off that included the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma among dignitaries at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

The visit comes as part of Nigeria’s diplomatic and economic outreach, aimed at deepening long-standing bilateral relations with Türkiye and advancing cooperation across key sectors including security, trade, investment, education, aviation, innovation, and social development.

Economic Imperatives and Strategic Objectives

From a public performance and economic lens, the Turkey visit offers several strategic opportunities for Nigeria:

  • Strengthening trade and investment ties: Bilateral trade between Nigeria and Türkiye has grown significantly in recent years, exceeding US$1 billion annually and previously peaking near US$2.7 billion, with both countries aiming to expand this to US$5 billion, signalling substantial future economic cooperation.
  • Diversifying economic partnerships: The visit is expected to foster agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) in areas such as scientific research, energy, technical cooperation, and military collaboration, which would not only boost economic diversification but also enhance Nigeria’s industrial and defence capabilities.
  • Business and investment forums: A Nigeria–Türkiye business forum is planned to bring together investors from both countries, potentially attracting increased foreign direct investment (FDI) into critical sectors of Nigeria’s economy and stimulating job creation.
  • Trade imbalance and non-oil exports: Nigerian exports to Türkiye and Turkish investments in Nigeria (estimated at around US$400 million across manufacturing, construction, and industrial sectors) point to an expanding economic relationship that could improve Nigeria’s trade balance and industrial base.
  • Security cooperation: Strengthening security cooperation and intelligence sharing with Türkiye, a NATO member with an active defence industry, could enhance Nigeria’s capacity to manage domestic and regional security challenges more effectively.

Diplomatic Continuity and Bilateral Relations

The presidency has emphasised that Tinubu’s trip builds on a series of high-level engagements between the two countries, notably including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s official visit to Nigeria in October 2021, which helped solidify strategic ties.

Türkiye and Nigeria have maintained formal diplomatic relations since 1960, and cooperation now spans healthcare, education, agriculture, defence, manufacturing, and visa facilitation, underpinning a multi-layered partnership that goes beyond basic diplomatic ties.

Analysts say that the state visit is also a geopolitical signal — President Tinubu is positioning Nigeria as an active player on the global stage, seeking diversified partnerships that deliver economic growth and technological collaboration. As Nigeria continues structural reforms under its Renewed Hope Agenda, deeper engagement with Türkiye — a transcontinental economy with strong infrastructure, defense production, and trade networks — could yield tangible benefits in terms of investment inflows, technology transfer, and export market access.

The President is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of the visit, with outcomes from the visit closely watched by business communities, economic planners, and political analysts alike.
