NEW YORK — Consuming high-sugar foods and beverages while undergoing antibiotic treatment significantly accelerates the destruction of healthy gut bacteria, leaving patients vulnerable to severe, life-threatening intestinal infections.
According to a landmark five-year study published in Nature led by researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and NYU Grossman School of Medicine, combining broad-spectrum antibiotics with sugar-rich diets leads to a sharp decline in gut microbiome diversity. Researchers found that for every 100 grams of sugar consumed—roughly equivalent to two cans of soda—microbiome diversity plummeted by 24%. This sudden depletion creates an ideal environment for opportunistic pathogens like Enterococcus to rapidly colonize the digestive tract, dramatically increasing the risk of bloodstream infections, systemic sepsis, and severe medical complications. Medical experts urge patients on antibiotic regimens to limit simple sugars and sweet drinks to preserve beneficial gut flora during treatment.
