President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and state governors have intensified efforts to reduce the cost of transportation across Nigeria, with a renewed push for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), electric vehicles and expanded refuelling infrastructure.
According to a statement shared by State House Digital, the President said discussions with the Governors’ Forum had produced a commitment by governors to take immediate measures aimed at bringing the benefits of cheaper energy closer to Nigerians.
The initiative is expected to focus strongly on leveraging the cost advantages of CNG and electric vehicles to reduce transportation fares, particularly within states where commuters feel the impact of rising transport costs most directly.
The Federal Government said it is already making significant investments in the energy transition through the Presidential CNG Initiative, with more than 120,000 vehicles reportedly converted nationwide and over 100,000 additional conversion kits in the pipeline.
Through the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund, the government is also financing more than 100 gas projects across the country, including 15 CNG mother stations and 86 daughter stations.
The President noted that four of the projects were commissioned in May in Lagos, Abuja and Oyo, including a 15-station refuelling network in Lagos and Abuja with the capacity to serve about 1,000 cars and tricycles as well as 50 trucks and buses daily.
In a further expansion of the programme, Tinubu said he had directed the rollout of another 500 CNG refuelling stations nationwide, in addition to the 500 stations already ordered earlier in the year, bringing the target to 1,000 stations across Nigeria.
The President also disclosed that governors have been encouraged to establish joint Federal and State Committees to begin implementing the measures immediately, with a target of launching CNG initiatives in 60 to 90 days.
From October, states are expected to begin the rollout of initiatives that will bring the benefits of cheaper fuel closer to the people, as the Federal Government and governors seek practical solutions to the burden of high transportation costs.
The renewed push signals a major test for the administration’s energy transition agenda: whether cheaper fuel can finally translate into genuinely cheaper transport fares for millions of Nigerians.
