Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s maritime justice system as a foundation for increased trade, investment confidence, and sustainable growth in the blue economy.
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, joined maritime sector leaders, judicial officers, government officials, and private sector stakeholders at the 18th International Maritime Seminar for Judges held in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Dantsoho emphasized that an effective maritime dispute resolution system and a strong justice framework are essential to building confidence among investors and ensuring smooth international trade operations.
The seminar, themed “Advancing Maritime Justice, Strengthening Global Trade,” focused on the critical role of the judiciary in resolving maritime disputes, protecting commercial interests, and promoting stability within the global shipping industry.
Dr. Dantsoho noted that Nigeria’s position as a major maritime nation requires continuous improvement in legal frameworks, regulatory systems, and institutional cooperation to unlock the full potential of its maritime sector.
He stressed that efficient maritime justice contributes significantly to reducing uncertainties in shipping, encouraging foreign direct investment, and improving the competitiveness of Nigerian ports within the global maritime community.
The NPA boss also highlighted the importance of collaboration among maritime agencies, the judiciary, industry operators, and international partners in addressing emerging challenges in the sector.
Nigeria’s maritime industry remains a key driver of economic development, with the country’s ports serving as gateways for regional and international commerce. Strengthening legal certainty around maritime operations is seen as vital to attracting investors and improving efficiency across the supply chain.
The Federal Government’s renewed focus on maritime justice aligns with ongoing efforts to modernize port operations, enhance trade facilitation, and position Nigeria as a leading maritime hub in Africa.
