Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has announced a major youth empowerment and energy sector intervention initiative tagged the Power Force Programme, aimed at training and deploying 5,000 young Nigerians as certified smart meter installers across the country.
The programme, which forms part of efforts to address Nigeria’s persistent electricity metering gap, is designed to strengthen the national power sector, improve billing transparency, and create sustainable employment opportunities for young people.
Addressing Nigeria’s Metering Deficit
According to the programme framework, millions of electricity consumers in Nigeria currently remain without functional meters, a situation that has contributed to widespread reliance on estimated billing.
The Federal Government stated that the Power Force initiative is structured to bridge this gap by developing a pool of skilled technicians capable of accelerating nationwide smart meter installation.
Officials say the intervention is expected to improve accountability within the electricity value chain while enhancing service delivery to consumers.
Free Technical Training for Young Nigerians
The programme will provide completely free technical training to selected applicants, removing financial barriers that often limit access to skilled vocational education.
Applicants are not required to possess a university degree, as eligibility is open to Nigerians who have completed at least secondary school education. This, according to programme coordinators, is aimed at expanding access to technical skills and inclusive employment opportunities.
Employment Pathways and Earnings
Successful participants will not only receive training but will also be placed on structured employment pathways within the energy sector.
According to the programme details, beneficiaries are expected to earn between ₦90,000 and ₦150,000 monthly, depending on deployment and engagement structure, marking one of the structured entry-level opportunities in Nigeria’s growing power sector value chain.
Skills, Certification and Deployment
Participants will undergo hands-on training in:
- Smart meter installation
- Electrical safety standards
- Technical installation procedures
- Field operations and maintenance
Upon completion, trainees will receive recognised certification, which will serve as a professional qualification within Nigeria’s energy industry.
NYSC Inclusion and Youth Participation
The programme also includes a dedicated quota for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), linking national service with practical skill acquisition and employability enhancement.
Officials say this integration is aimed at ensuring that young graduates and corps members can transition smoothly into productive technical careers after service.
Ending Estimated Billing and Strengthening the Power Sector
The Federal Government noted that the initiative is a strategic component of broader power sector reforms aimed at eliminating estimated billing, improving revenue assurance, and strengthening investor confidence in Nigeria’s electricity market.
