President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unveiled a comprehensive plan to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture through increased investment in modern law enforcement systems, training, and intelligence gathering.
The President made this known at the 2026 National Police Day Grand Parade and Procession held in Abuja, where he was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Addressing officers and stakeholders, President Tinubu emphasized that the Nigerian state has a moral obligation to equip and empower its security agencies, noting that national peace and stability depend largely on the capacity and welfare of those entrusted with safeguarding citizens.
He disclosed that the Federal Government would prioritize enhanced training, improved intelligence systems, modern policing equipment, and better welfare packages for personnel of the Nigeria Police Force as part of efforts to transform it into a world-class institution.
Paying tribute to fallen officers, the President stated, “Their sacrifice is written into the conscience of our country,” while extending gratitude to their families for their resilience and patriotism. He also commended serving officers for their dedication, urging them to uphold professionalism, fairness, and fidelity to the rule of law.
President Tinubu further stressed that the police uniform symbolizes a covenant of service rather than a license for arbitrariness, calling for stronger collaboration between citizens and law enforcement agencies. He underscored the importance of community-centered policing as a cornerstone of democratic governance.
In his remarks, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to discipline, accountability, and professionalism. He assured Nigerians of ongoing reforms aimed at building a more transparent and citizen-focused police service, while pledging support for officers who demonstrate integrity in the line of duty.
Corporate stakeholders, including representatives of Wema Bank and Premium Trust Bank, also paid tribute to the police and pledged continued support toward enhancing professional policing services nationwide.
The event featured ceremonial march-pasts, processions, and tactical displays by police units, as well as cadets from the Police Academy, showcasing operational readiness and discipline within the Force.
Dignitaries present included deputy governors, representatives of the National Assembly leadership, service chiefs, former Inspectors-General of Police, the President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association, members of the diplomatic corps, and other senior government officials.
The 2026 National Police Day celebration highlighted renewed commitments to reforming Nigeria’s policing system and strengthening trust between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.
