NDLEA Uncovers Hidden Opioid Shipments in Cream, Jackets at Lagos Airport

AWC Aviation Desk

Lagos, March 22, 2026 — Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted large consignments of opioids, cannabis, and methamphetamine concealed in unusual items, including body cream containers and winter jackets, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport and a courier facility in Lagos.
According to the agency, the seizures were made during a series of coordinated operations targeting drug trafficking networks attempting to move illicit substances through Nigeria’s busiest international gateway.
Major Arrests and Seizures
NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, disclosed that two suspects bound for Italy were arrested at the airport in separate operations.
One of the suspects, identified as a 37-year-old traveler, was intercepted while attempting to board a flight to Rome with 2,698 tramadol pills concealed inside skin-lightening cream containers packed in his luggage.
In another case, a second suspect was apprehended with a significantly larger haul—over 28,000 opioid pills hidden in the lining of winter jackets while preparing to travel to Milan.

Courier Interception and Additional Finds
Beyond the airport, NDLEA operatives also intercepted illicit shipments at a Lagos-based courier firm, including:
Cannabis (“Loud”) concealed in imported parcels from the United States
Methamphetamine hidden in carton walls bound for New Zealand

Authorities say traffickers employed increasingly sophisticated concealment methods, embedding drugs in everyday items to evade detection.
Wider Crackdown Across Nigeria
The agency noted that the Lagos operations were part of a broader nationwide crackdown, with additional seizures recorded across multiple states, including Kano, Kaduna, Edo, Oyo, Taraba, and the Federal Capital Territory.
Chairman of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), commended officers for their vigilance and urged continued efforts under the agency’s anti-drug campaign.
Implications
Security analysts say the latest seizures highlight:
Nigeria’s continued role as a transit route in global drug trafficking networks
The evolving tactics of traffickers, using everyday consumer items for concealment
The need for sustained surveillance at airports and logistics hubs
The NDLEA’s latest operation underscores intensified efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks, as authorities intercept increasingly sophisticated smuggling attempts through Lagos — Nigeria’s key international gateway.
