Soludo Explains Crackdown on Native Doctors in Anambra

Awka, March 2026 — The Governor of Anambra State, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has clarified the rationale behind his administration’s recent clampdown on some native doctors across the state.

Speaking during a media chat in Awka on Friday, Governor Soludo stated that the government’s actions were not targeted at traditional religion but aimed at curbing criminal activities being perpetrated under its cover.

The governor emphasised that while the state respects freedom of worship and cultural practices, intelligence reports have revealed that certain individuals posing as native doctors have been linked to crimes, including ritual-related activities and other forms of insecurity.

“I am not against traditional religion,” Soludo said, noting that genuine practitioners have nothing to fear. “However, we cannot allow criminal elements to exploit tradition as a shield for illegal acts.”

He stressed that the crackdown is part of broader efforts to restore law and order, enhance public safety, and protect the integrity of Anambra’s cultural heritage.

The governor further assured residents that the government would continue to differentiate between legitimate traditional practices and criminal behaviour, urging community leaders and stakeholders to support the initiative.

The move has sparked mixed reactions within the state, with some residents backing the government’s stance on security, while others have called for caution to avoid stigmatizing authentic traditional worshippers.

Authorities say the enforcement exercise will continue in line with the state’s commitment to ensuring a safe and lawful environment for all citizens.
