A deadly bomb explosion ripped through a mosque at Gamboru Market in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Thursday, December 25, 2025, killing about five worshippers and leaving several others injured in what authorities have described as a terrorist attack on innocent civilians.

Condemning the incident in strong terms, Vice President Kashim Shettima said the attack would not break Nigeria’s resolve to defeat terrorism, assuring that the Federal Government has ordered an immediate intensification of security operations across Borno State.

Orders for Immediate Security Clampdown

In a statement released on Thursday, Shettima disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed security agencies to deploy additional tactical teams to the affected areas to track down and apprehend those behind the attack.

“The Federal Government will not tolerate any attempt to undermine the peace and security of our nation. Our security agencies are working round the clock to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to justice immediately,” the Vice President said.

He added that the current security architecture is robust enough not only to arrest the attackers but also to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the bombing.

Attack on Faith, Peace and Humanity

Describing the explosion as a despicable act of terrorism, Shettima noted that targeting worshippers inside a mosque represents a direct assault on faith, communal harmony and national stability.

“We sympathise with the Government of Borno State, the residents of Maiduguri, and the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragic incident,” he said, pledging that those responsible would face the full weight of the law.

Renewed Commitment to National Security

The Vice President reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s security, unity and territorial integrity.

“Since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office in 2023, this administration has consistently reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the security, unity and stability of our nation. We will continue to provide our security agencies with all necessary resources and support to decisively defeat terrorism in all its forms,” Shettima stated.

He further revealed that the Federal Government is working closely with the Borno State Government, local security outfits and community structures to protect vulnerable populations and critical infrastructure, not only in the North-East but across the country.

A Test of National Resolve

The Maiduguri mosque bombing comes amid ongoing efforts to degrade the operational capacity of terrorist groups in the North-East. While the attack has renewed fears among residents, federal authorities insist it will only strengthen Nigeria’s resolve to end terrorism.

Security presence around markets, places of worship and other soft targets in Maiduguri has since been heightened, as investigations continue and residents await justice for the victims of the deadly blast.
