Nigeria’s Solid Minerals Push Gains Global Attention

Nigeria’s drive to unlock the full potential of its solid minerals sector is gathering momentum, drawing fresh international interest and signaling a shift from raw exports to value-added production that could reshape the economy.

Across the country, landmark projects are redefining the mining landscape. A high-purity gold refinery is already operational in Lagos, three additional refineries are under development, and a $600 million lithium processing plant in Nasarawa State is set for commissioning. Together, these investments point to a future where Nigeria processes more of what it mines, creates skilled jobs, and captures greater value from its natural resources.

Observers say the progress reflects a broader ambition to position Nigeria as a competitive player in the global minerals market. Rather than shipping unprocessed ore abroad, the country is building the capacity to refine, process and supply critical minerals needed for industries ranging from jewelry to clean energy and electric vehicles.

Recent engagement with Saudi Arabia has further raised expectations. Discussions with Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources opened doors for cooperation in technical training, technology transfer and advanced mineral exploration—areas seen as vital for modernising Nigeria’s mining sector.

Equally important, stakeholders are stressing the need for responsible mining. Emphasis on mineral traceability, strong environmental and social standards, and proper rehabilitation of mining sites is being viewed as essential for protecting host communities and attracting long-term investors.

For many Nigerians, the unfolding developments offer cautious optimism: a chance for solid minerals to become a true engine of inclusive growth, diversify national income, and reduce over dependence on oil—if reforms are sustained and benefits reach ordinary citizens.
