The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commended the Swiss Government for its sustained and strategic partnership with the Nigerian Army, describing Switzerland’s contributions to humanitarian assistance, peace-building and conflict prevention as vital to Nigeria’s security and stability efforts.
Lieutenant General Shaibu gave the commendation on 14 January 2026 during a courtesy visit by the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Patrick Felix Egloff, at Army Headquarters. He noted that modern security challenges require more than kinetic responses, stressing that international collaboration in non-kinetic areas such as humanitarian support, dialogue facilitation and capacity building remains critical to lasting peace.
The Army Chief praised Switzerland’s longstanding reputation for neutrality, mediation and humanitarian diplomacy, adding that its support aligns with the Nigerian Army’s evolving approach to security operations that prioritises civilian protection, community engagement and conflict prevention. He specifically acknowledged Switzerland’s tangible assistance, including the provision of mobile medical clinics, which have enhanced humanitarian outreach in conflict-affected areas.
Reaffirming the Army’s commitment to professionalism, Lieutenant General Shaibu assured the Swiss Government of continued adherence to international best practices, respect for human rights, and compliance with the rules of engagement in all operations. He described the partnership as mutually beneficial and important for strengthening regional stability.
In his remarks, Ambassador Egloff reiterated Switzerland’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Nigeria, particularly in humanitarian assistance, peace initiatives and dialogue-driven conflict resolution. He expressed confidence in the Nigerian Army’s leadership and professionalism, noting that Switzerland remains ready to expand its non-kinetic support to complement Nigeria’s security and development objectives.
The engagement underscores Nigeria’s growing emphasis on combining military effectiveness with humanitarian and peace-building efforts, as global partnerships increasingly shape responses to complex security challenges.
