President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound grief over the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of celebrated Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, offering heartfelt condolences to her, her husband Dr Ivara Esege, and their family.
In a condolence message dated 8 January 2026, the President described the loss of a child as one of the most devastating experiences any parent can endure, noting that he deeply empathises with the family at this moment of sorrow.
“As a parent myself who has suffered the loss of a loved one, no grief is as devastating as losing a child,” President Tinubu said, adding that he mourns alongside the Adichie family during this painful period.
The President paid glowing tribute to Ms Adichie as a global literary icon whose works have inspired and brought joy to millions around the world, stressing that the nation shares in her grief. He offered prayers for strength, comfort and divine support, expressing hope that the family would find solace in faith as they navigate the difficult days ahead.
Nkanu Nnamdi reportedly passed away on 7 January 2026 at a private hospital in Lagos after a brief illness. Media and family accounts indicate that he was taken to Euracare Multispecialist Hospital, Lagos, on 6 January 2026 for medical care related to a serious infection and preparatory treatment ahead of a planned evacuation abroad. He reportedly died following complications, with the family alleging lapses in care during treatment.
The incident has drawn widespread public attention, prompting the Lagos State Government to order a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death amid allegations of medical negligence.
