The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening security operations in Niger State, stressing the importance of close collaboration with traditional institutions to tackle emerging threats.

General Shaibu made this assurance on Wednesday, 7 January 2026, during a courtesy visit to the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, His Royal Highness Alhaji Dr. Yahaya Abubakar, CFR, at his palace in Bida. The visit formed part of the Army Chief’s ongoing engagements aimed at reviewing security deployments and reinforcing civil-military cooperation across the country.

During the meeting, the COAS said the visit provided an opportunity to assess ongoing military operations, identify operational gaps, and determine areas requiring additional troops, equipment, and combat support. He emphasised that the Nigerian Army’s strategy in the state is anchored on intelligence-driven operations, proactive community engagement, and the deployment of modern surveillance technologies to counter evolving security challenges.

Lieutenant General Shaibu commended the Etsu Nupe for his consistent support to troops operating in the state, describing traditional rulers as critical partners in the fight against insecurity due to their proximity to the grassroots and access to local intelligence.

In his response, the Etsu Nupe pledged the continued cooperation of traditional institutions, including timely intelligence sharing and community sensitisation, to support security agencies. He also offered prayers for the success of ongoing operations and praised the professionalism and discipline of Nigerian Army personnel, noting their positive engagement with local communities in promoting peace and stability.

The engagement underscores the Nigerian Army’s resolve to deepen civil-military relations and leverage local support structures in its drive to restore lasting security in Niger State and beyond.
