Tinubu Appoints Fadewa Special Adviser on Homeland Security

AWC SECURITY DESK

May, 2026 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of retired Major General Adeyinka Fadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security, in a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s internal security coordination and intelligence architecture.

The appointment was conveyed in a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and issued through the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Ibrahim Kana.

According to the statement, the appointment reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to enhancing intelligence-driven operations, improving inter-agency cooperation, and addressing evolving security threats confronting the country.

Major General Fadewa, described as a highly decorated retired officer, brings more than three decades of military and intelligence experience spanning counterterrorism operations, strategic defence planning, intelligence fusion, homeland security coordination, and international security diplomacy.

Government officials noted that his military career was distinguished by operational excellence, strategic leadership, and contributions toward safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and national security interests.

Analysts say the appointment comes at a critical period as Nigeria continues to confront multiple security challenges including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, cyber threats, separatist violence, transnational organised crime, and attacks on critical national infrastructure.

Security observers believe the creation and strengthening of homeland security coordination under the presidency signals a growing emphasis on integrated intelligence gathering, preventive security strategy, and institutional synergy among security agencies.

The appointment is also expected to complement the efforts of the Office of the National Security Adviser currently headed by Nuhu Ribadu, particularly in areas involving internal security stabilization, intelligence coordination, and national emergency preparedness.

Experts note that modern homeland security frameworks increasingly require close collaboration between military intelligence, law enforcement, border control agencies, cyber-security institutions, emergency response systems, and civilian authorities.

Fadewa’s experience in strategic security operations and intelligence management is expected to play a role in supporting ongoing reforms under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, especially efforts aimed at improving national security, investor confidence, and social stability.

While details of his specific mandate are yet to be fully outlined publicly, officials indicated that his responsibilities will involve advising the President on homeland security strategy, strengthening coordination among security institutions, and developing proactive responses to emerging domestic threats.

Political and security analysts say the appointment further demonstrates the administration’s reliance on experienced military and intelligence professionals in tackling Nigeria’s complex security environment.
