Nigeria and the United States have reinforced their strategic partnership with renewed commitments to counterterrorism cooperation, intelligence sharing, regional stability, and defence collaboration following high-level meetings between Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and top U.S. officials in Washington.

Ribadu, who undertook a three-day working visit to the United States from May 4 to May 6, conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s longstanding bilateral relationship with the United States amid evolving security threats across West Africa and the Sahel region.

During the visit, the NSA met with United States Vice President J. D. Vance, Acting National Security Adviser and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Undersecretary for Political Affairs Allison Hooker, and Assistant Secretary of War Daniel Zimmerim.

The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in counterterrorism operations, defence coordination, intelligence exchange, border security, democratic governance, and economic resilience.

Ribadu stressed the urgent need for sustained international cooperation in tackling terrorism, violent extremism, cybercrime, and transnational organised crime, particularly in the Lake Chad Basin and the broader Sahel corridor, where insecurity continues to threaten regional peace and development.

According to the NSA, Nigeria remains committed to working with global partners to promote peace, democratic stability, and economic growth across Africa, while maintaining its role as a frontline state in counterterrorism efforts within West Africa.

The meetings also reviewed progress under the Nigeria–U.S. Joint Working Group (JWG), a framework established to strengthen structured bilateral cooperation on strategic security matters. Both countries examined measures aimed at improving implementation of initiatives involving military cooperation, strategic communications, intelligence sharing, and institutional capacity development for Nigerian security agencies.

At the U.S. Department of State, Ribadu expressed appreciation to the American government for its continued support to Nigeria in areas including humanitarian assistance, defence training, intelligence collaboration, and counterterrorism operations.

He further briefed U.S. officials on ongoing security reforms and operational measures being implemented by the Tinubu administration to stabilize affected communities and address the root causes of insecurity through both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches. These include community engagement programmes, deradicalisation initiatives, economic interventions, and regional partnerships.

U.S. officials commended Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting regional peace and security, describing the country as a key strategic partner of the United States in Africa. Both nations reaffirmed their shared commitment to democratic values, sustainable peace, and regional stability.

The meetings concluded with both sides expressing optimism about the future of Nigeria–United States relations and agreeing to deepen diplomatic engagement and security cooperation through sustained implementation of the Joint Working Group framework.

Analysts say the renewed partnership comes at a critical period as West African nations confront growing security challenges linked to insurgency, political instability, arms trafficking, and extremist activities spreading across the Sahel region.
