Operation Savannah Shield has been launched to combat rising cases of banditry and insecurity in Kwara and Niger States, in a renewed push to restore peace and safeguard livelihoods in affected communities.
The flag-off ceremony took place at Sobi Barracks in Ilorin, with Abdul Rahman Abdulrazaq, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, in attendance.
The security operation is designed to curb criminal activities, dismantle bandit networks, and enhance coordination among security agencies operating within the North-Central region.
Governor Abdulrazaq described the initiative as a timely intervention for communities grappling with persistent attacks and disruptions to economic activities. He emphasised that the operation would prioritise the protection of key agricultural belts, noting that improved security would enable farmers to return safely to their fields and contribute to food production.
According to him, restoring stability in rural communities is critical not only for the safety of residents but also for strengthening food security and boosting economic resilience in the region.
Military authorities assured residents that Operation Savannah Shield would involve sustained surveillance, intelligence-driven operations, and close collaboration with local stakeholders to ensure lasting peace.
The launch underscores ongoing efforts to reinforce security architecture and address threats to lives, property, and agricultural productivity in Kwara and neighbouring Niger State.
