Nigeria: Tinubu Mourns Massacre of 237 Persons in Kwara Community, Charges Military to Crush the Terrorists

AWC Security Desk, February 5, 2026

Nigeria was plunged into mourning on Wednesday following the killing of about 237 villagers in a deadly overnight terrorist attack on Worro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, an assault that has drawn nationwide outrage and an immediate military response.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reacting to the massacre, ordered the deployment of an Army battalion to Kaiama, directing that a new military command spearhead Operation Savannah Shield to confront and dismantle the terrorist elements responsible for the carnage. The President described the attack as cowardly, beastly, and an assault on innocent citizens who posed no threat.

According to the President, the terrorists deliberately targeted defenceless villagers after the community rejected attempts at forced indoctrination and radicalisation. He noted that the victims, though Muslims, stood firmly against extremist ideologies that promote violence over peaceful coexistence.

“It is commendable that the community members refused to be conscripted into a weird belief system that glorifies violence rather than peace and dialogue,” the President said, condemning the attackers for choosing soft targets in what he described as a doomed campaign of terror.

The President charged the Nigerian military to act decisively to crush the terrorists and restore security in the affected areas, while also calling for close collaboration between federal and state authorities to provide urgent relief and humanitarian support to survivors.

He assured that those behind the atrocities would be pursued and held accountable, stressing that impunity would not be tolerated. President Tinubu also extended condolences to families of the victims, as well as to the government and people of Kwara State, while praying for the repose of the souls of those killed.

The attack has heightened concerns over the spread of terrorist violence beyond traditional flashpoints, renewing calls for stronger intelligence coordination and rapid-response security architecture to protect vulnerable rural communities across the country.
