Atiku’s Son Crosses Party Lines, Backs Tinubu and APC Ahead of 2027

In a development that has stirred Nigeria’s political space, Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President and perennial presidential contender Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), pledging his loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling party.

Abba Abubakar’s defection was confirmed at a gathering of APC stakeholders in his home Ward in Adamawa State, where he openly declared his support for President Tinubu’s leadership and reform agenda. He stated that his decision was driven by a belief in the APC’s vision for Nigeria and the need for stability, continuity, and inclusive governance.

Speaking at the event, Abba assured party leaders and supporters of his full commitment, vowing to mobilise support and work actively to ensure President Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 presidential polls. He described the Tinubu administration as one laying the foundation for long-term national growth, despite current economic and political challenges.

Political observers see the move as symbolically significant, given Abba’s family background and his father’s longstanding association with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The defection is expected to further energise the APC, especially in the North-East, while also intensifying debates around shifting political loyalties ahead of the next general elections.

For the APC, the development is being projected as a boost to its growing coalition, while for the opposition, it underscores the fluid and high-stakes nature of Nigeria’s evolving political landscape as 2027 draws closer.
