A fresh political debate has erupted in Rivers State following remarks by Senator Magnus Abe describing former Governor Nyesom Wike as “001” within the Renewed Hope political family, a statement that has since been widely interpreted—and misinterpreted—in partisan circles.
Clarifying the controversy, AWC political Desk note that Senator Abe did not describe Wike as “APC 001,” but rather as Renewed Hope 001—a symbolic reference to Wike’s perceived influence within the broader political coalition aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, not formal membership or ranking within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This distinction has become critical amid the shifting political landscape in Rivers State, especially following the defection of Governor Siminalayi Fubara from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. With Fubara now the sitting governor on the platform of the APC, party loyalists insist that APC 001 in Rivers State must, by structure and logic, belong to a card-carrying APC member, not an ally operating outside the party.
Wike, a former PDP governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is not a registered member of the APC. As such, analysts argue that while he may wield significant political influence nationally and enjoy proximity to the Presidency, he cannot be described as APC 001, a designation traditionally reserved for founding or leading party members within a state or at the national level.
The controversy has further exposed the fault lines between institutional party leadership and informal political power, particularly in Rivers State, where alliances, loyalties and influence continue to evolve rapidly ahead of future electoral contests.
Political commentators have urged caution against deliberate or careless conflation of terms, stressing that “Renewed Hope 001” is a political metaphor, not a party title, while “APC 001” is an organisational identity with far-reaching implications within a political party.
