In can be translated to a concrete commitment, the Federal Government has commenced the Lokoja–Benin Road with 50-year lifespan upgrade.
The commencement of the long-awaited dualisation of the Lokoja–Benin Road (Obajana Junction to Benin axis), marks a decisive shift toward durable infrastructure and accountable project execution.
Works on the strategic corridor had resumed in February 2025 after the termination of poorly performing contracts, in line with a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a permanent and technically sound solution. The new approach adopts Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) technology, engineered to last between 50 and 100 years, significantly reducing the cycle of recurrent repairs that have plagued the route.
Speaking on the project, the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, disclosed that the highway has been broken into four sections and reassigned to reputable construction firms—CGC Nigeria Ltd, BUA Construction Nigeria Ltd, and CBC Nigeria Ltd—to ensure speed, quality, and measurable outcomes. Construction activities are currently ongoing across sections of the corridor.
From a performance-indices standpoint, the project directly targets key public metrics: road durability, motorability, safety, travel time reduction, and cost efficiency. The Lokoja–Benin Road is a vital economic artery linking the North-Central to the South-South and South-West, and its rehabilitation is expected to ease logistics, cut vehicle operating costs, and stimulate trade and industrial activities across Kogi and Edo States.
For road users and host communities, the resumption signals a shift from temporary fixes to value-for-money infrastructure, reflecting improved contract governance, enforcement of performance standards, and a results-driven infrastructure policy under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Analysts note that the use of CRCP technology and the reassignment to capable contractors provide measurable benchmarks for success, including project longevity, reduced maintenance expenditure, and sustained economic impact, positioning the Lokoja–Benin Road as a test case for future federal highway projects.
As construction progresses, the project stands as a public demonstration of the Federal Government’s resolve to translate policy promises into long-lasting infrastructure that delivers real economic and social returns for Nigerians.
