Nigeria and Belgium have taken concrete steps toward strengthening air connectivity and deepening economic ties, as both countries commenced talks on a new Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA).
The Federal Government hosted the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Pieter Leenknegt, at the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development in Abuja, where discussions were led by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Hon. Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON.
The meeting focused on advancing negotiations for a fresh BASA framework that would expand air transport links between both countries. Officials from both sides engaged in extensive deliberations and agreed to work closely to conclude the agreement in the shortest possible time.
The proposed BASA is expected to improve air connectivity, open new routes, and create greater opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment flows between Nigeria and Belgium. It is also seen as a strategic step toward strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two nations.
Speaking during the engagement, Minister Keyamo reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to building mutually beneficial aviation partnerships that support economic growth, enhance mobility, and position the country as a major aviation hub in Africa.
The talks signal renewed momentum in Nigeria’s aviation diplomacy, with stakeholders optimistic that a finalized agreement will unlock new commercial opportunities and further integrate Nigeria into global air transport networks.
